European Restart a Heart Day

Today all students in Year 9 undertook basic life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training.  All the students involved attended a 40 minute training session with trainers.  This initiative is part of the ‘European Restart a Heart Day’ organised in the UK by the British Heart Foundation.  The aim of the day is to train as many students nationally as possible in CPR.  The school has been working with Yorkshire Ambulance Service and the British Heart Foundation ready for the big day of training for a number of months. In helping to train the 220 students’ at Selby High School, personnel from Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Community First Responders, and St John Ambulance attended the school to deliver the sessions.  In addition to the students a large number of staff also attended the sessions.  The training involved watching an instructional film and then with the help of the trainers practise the life-saving skills on mannequins provided by the British Heart Foundation.  All students that achieved the required level of basic awareness received a charity wrist band and a certificate.

In 2014, 50 schools across Yorkshire and the Humber were involved in the single day of training which delivered training to more than 11,000 children. This year the target has been set at reaching 15,000 children in a single day.
