Principal’s Welcome

Message from the Principal

As Principal of Selby High School, I’m delighted to welcome you to our website.  In these pages I hope you will get a flavour of what a great place Selby High is to work and learn.  We are an inclusive secondary school for students aged 11 to 16, committed to providing an outstanding education to all.

A talented and committed team of teachers and support staff work exceptionally well with parents, carers and governors to provide a high quality education for students which secures outstanding outcomes, year in year out.

At Selby High School we ensure that every individual reaches their academic and personal potential, no matter what their starting point.  We combine a strong focus on the core areas of literacy, numeracy and science, with a rich and engaging curriculum which offers a broad variety of exciting courses, including the full range of art, technology, sport-related and performing arts based subjects.  Learning is carefully structured around the knowledge, skills and understanding required both for success in examinations, and preparation for life in the modern world.

We aim to develop resilience and independence in our students, acknowledging that learning from our mistakes is all part of making great progress.  Through regular assessment of learning we are able to inform students and their parents and carers of strengths and areas for development at regular points throughout the year.

Strong pastoral support is central to our work, and we pride ourselves on the safe, friendly environment in our school.  Student and staff wellbeing is at the heart of all we do.  Excellent behaviour stems from the high expectations in place, alongside the positive relationships between all members of the school community.  Student voice is very important to us, and as well as the main Student Council we have 5 thriving Year Group Councils and a Student Wellbeing Group.

We believe in a fully rounded education and are committed to enabling all our young people to develop into happy, tolerant and confident adults.  We have a programme of events which prepare students to be caring and considerate citizens in 21st Century Britain, as well as a rich extra-curricular programme.   There are many opportunities to partake in sporting and creative activities, and we look to nurture young people’s talents and interests whatever they may be.

Our website only begins to show you the wealth of opportunities at Selby High School.  To find out more about our school, please don’t hesitate to contact us.  We’d be more than happy arrange a visit so that you can see our exceptional educational offer for yourself.
