Students WISE up thanks to Alice & Darryl

It was wonderful to welcome back into school one of our former students Alice Thomas; she was one of our 2008 leavers. Alice and Darryl How, one of her fellow engineers at Arup, Leeds, came into school to talk and work with a number of our students with regard to engineering, particularly in respect of women in science and engineering and chemistry. Alice joined the Arup Group after gaining a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Aston University; Darryl followed a similar route, albeit a few years earlier, just across the city at Birmingham University.

The highlight of the morning was working with Year 10 & 11 chemists purifying very dirty water so that it was good enough to drink and comparing the lab based work with that undertaken by Alice & Darryl for their client, Yorkshire Water, in order to achieve a similar outcome. Darryl and Alice also explained one of the development projects they are involved in, ‘energy from waste’ and their visits to the farm; enough said!
