Student Leadership Event

On Friday 12th February Sam Shore (student council president) and Molly Noot (student council member) attended a Student Leadership event with North Yorkshire County Council at County Hall, Northallerton.

This event allowed student voice representatives from secondary schools in North Yorkshire a chance to network, share good practice and collaborate on ideas to create outstanding student voice in North Yorkshire. Students listened to Rishi Sunak, Richmond MP and Andrew Jones, Harrogate and Knaresborough MP and the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at Department for Transport since May 2015. They shared inspirational stories of choosing a life in politics. Later the students had opportunity to talk to Andrew Jones and ask questions, with his transport role; questions on HS2, rural bus services and discounted bus fares. Sam and Molly gave a speech on The Discovery Democracy awards, a recent accreditation Selby High school achieved. Being only 1 of 21 schools to achieve this accolade, the other student council members present were very interested in how this had been achieved. Sam and Molly answered their questions admirably.

After a day of discussions, especially about the promoting of LGBT support in schools, ideas for disadvantaged children and the support they could receive and also praise systems being more effective than behavioural, we returned with several new ideas to implement in school in order to make our already successful student council even greater.
