North Yorkshire School Games Regional Badminton Final

After students qualified in late 2017 to represent the Selby District area in KS3 boys and KS4 boys and girls, the finals took place this week at York RI sports club.  The students faced the winning schools from the other 6 districts within North Yorkshire guaranteeing that their badminton performance would be pushed to its limits.  The early round proved testing for all of the Selby team as each squad faced last years’ champions in the first round of matches.  The standard was high across all age groups and students found the matches challenging.  They showed great resilience in their performance and each squad managed to accumulate a number of victories in both singles and doubles matches.

The KS4 girls had a good set of results which saw them progress to the semi final stage.  They faced the 2016 champions and were edged out of the competition after a plucky performance; they did manage to secure 3rd place in the finals, the best result Selby have experienced at this tournament in recent years.  The high level of competition, although challenging, provided great experience for the students and has inspired them to continue to develop their badminton skills and game play.  We hopefully will return next year to try and add to the fantastic result the KS4 girls achieved this year.
