Talent Wars 2016

Selby High’s annual talent show, this year with a Star Wars theme, was once again a huge success. The talent amongst our students never ceases to amaze. Performing to a sell-out audience were 11 lower school acts in the first half of the show and 10 upper school acts in the second half.  This year showcased the most variety we’ve had yet with singers, musicians, a rock band, dancers, comedy drama acts and a stand-up comedian on the bill. To open the show the staff band warmed up the audience brilliantly with ‘Don’t stop believing’ and the staff entertainment continued from the presenters Mr Cousins & Mr Sinclair, in the roles of Luke Skywalker and Hans Solo. They also treated the audience to a light sabre battle with a difference! The Young Voices Choir then sang ‘The Power In Me’ beautifully whilst the judges made their very tough decisions.

The Lower school winner with an outstanding rendition of Beyonce’s ‘Listen’ was Kate Hinken, with Dan Toone on guitar &  Charlie Harris’ dance routine as joint second place runners up. The Upper school winner with a stunning and professional performance was Talia Firth singing Whitney Houston’s ‘I have Nothing’. In joint second place were Carl Leighton on piano and dance trio Charlotte Partridge, Charlotte Black and Sophie Anderson. With Talia Firth winning overall winner of Selby High School’s Talent Show 2016.

The funds raised were in aid of Selby Young Carers, we were lucky enough to have Samantha Monk Manager of Harrogate/Craven and Selby Young Carers join us on the night to see our talented students who were providing the entertainment to raise money for their charity.

“What a fantastic night, I thoroughly enjoyed every act; it was a tough competition as I experienced it as both a spectator and a competitor. We really enjoyed preparing for the show and performing to a fantastic audience. One act in particular stunned me, Talia Firth, what a great vocal range she has and she definitely deserved to win.” By Mark Readman, Y11 pupil.
