You Only Live Once

On Monday 10th February, Year 10 students enjoyed watching and taking part in YOLO (you only live once), a North Yorkshire Theatre in Education project.  All of the year group were involved either in a morning or afternoon session for two hours.

The main focus of the presentation, which was followed by a workshop, was based around risk taking behaviours, it looked at several issues that have been highlighted as causing concern amongst young people. The production centred around the lives of two youngsters, Sophie and Daniel, and through a series of short scenarios covered issues relating to drug use, inappropriate use of the internet and social media, sexual activity and family issues including bereavement. The students really engaged with the play and workshop which were presented in an excellent manner and seemed to get a lot out of the opportunity., they reported that it covered important issues in a way that they could understand. In the workshop sections the responses given by our students clearly indicated that they had understood the intended concepts. It was a very worthwhile event.

Theatre in Education is an effective way of engaging the emotions and the imagination of students, enabling them to explore their own attitudes and feelings about issues as well as gaining knowledge about a particular topic.
