Yorkshire 6 a side Hockey

Friday saw another first for Selby High School as the Senior boys entered the Yorkshire 6 a side Hockey competition for the first time. The boys have developed their skills and team play in the mixed North Yorkshire competitions over the last few years (with the technical ability and experience of the girls). All the boys hockey experience has really been through school, with a lack of a men's hockey club in the area. The Yorkshire competition was split into 2 pools with Harrogate, Thirsk and Ripon schools in the northern pool and Selby in the southern and west pool with Hall Cross (Doncaster), Driffield, Ossett, Kettlethorpe and Headlands.

A competitive first game with Kettlethorpe saw Selby come back twice to earn a well deserved 3-3 draw. 1-1 next against Headlands was unfortunate as Selby had some great team play but were denied the win by some good individual play from the Headlands captain.
After a 40 minute break Selby came out strong in the first half against Driffield to go 4-0 up, with quick passing and solid defending from Will McDonald and James Morton and pace going forward from James Adamson. Great goalkeeping from James Abbott in the second half saw out a 4-0 victory. Game 4 against Ossett was a disappointing 2-0 loss as the flow of the game was broken up with fouls and free hits on both sides. The final game was against the strongest team in the group Hall Cross, who had already won the group. The highlight from Selby was a brilliant goal scored at 6-0 down as James Morton lifted the ball into the D for James Britain to strike home as the ball bounced. One of only 2 goals Hall Cross had conceded all day.

The boys all enjoyed the day and played some good hockey against experienced players.

Well done to all the players.
