Year 5 Specialism Days 2017

During the past two weeks, 12th- 22ndJune, our annual primary specialism days have catered for four hundred and fifty Year 5 students from fifteen primary schools. We transported them into Selby High School so they could spend the day experiencing the school’s specialism areas of science and the arts.

The Year 5 students had the opportunity to benefit from our specialist equipment, resources and teaching. They also had the support and guidance of Selby High School students who led by example and enthusiastically participated, giving ideas and advice wherever possible.

In science the Year 5 students had great fun investigating acids, alkalis and indicators. They made their own indicator using natural ingredients and then used it to identify mystery solutions. They then used acids, alkalis and indicators to make a picture which was converted into a coaster to take home.

After lunch they spent the afternoon in two different arts workshops. Highlights included drama activities led by our own Selby High School students, energetic dance sessions and very loud music lessons!

All the primary school staff commented on what a fantastic transition tool this day provides as well as the positive experience that students really enjoyed. It was also good to know that we have delivered some sessions that teachers could use or even develop further back at primary school themselves.

Another successful year!
