Year 11 students take part in York Schools Science quiz

On Thursday 12th March eight high achieving Selby High School students took part in the second York Schools Science quiz, run by the Ogden trust at St Peter’s school in York. Twenty two school teams competed along with four teacher teams (put together from the teachers who brought the pupils along from the various schools) for the trophies and prizes. Two teams of four year 11 pupils represented the school; Harriet Lobley, Jordan Goodwin, Jamie Halder, Owen Crawford, Max Sullivan, Joe Kelly, Ben Brown and Arran Lawrenson. The students were up against a number of schools from in and around the York area including; Manor CE School, Canon Lee School, The Joseph Rowntree School, Huntington School, Archbishop Holgate’s School, Fulford School, All Saints School, Millthorpe School, St Peter’s School, Bootham School, The Mount School and Scarborough College.

The event took place as part of the York ISSP and also the York Schools Ogden Partnership, with a number of prizes being donated by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute of Physics, the Rotary Club of York Vikings and the Ogden Trust. The pupils were expected to compete in a twelve round quiz focussing on a number of physics, biology and chemistry topics. Both teams competed extremely well providing excellent answers to a number of very difficult questions and the students were awarded the 3rd place year 11 category prize of their hard work and endeavour.

This was, yet again, a superb achievement for the students considering the type of competition they were up against. Both teams had a fantastic night and we hope to build on our success once again next year where we will be competing to once again get our name on the trophy.
