Speed dating with Industry
Selby High School have held yet another successful Speed Dating with Industry day with the support of NYBEP. The annual event is always a success with students who give positive feedback and come away from the event feeling enthused and motivated for their futures. The informal and fast-paced sessions provide Year 10 students with a range of opportunities to consider and investigate in this exciting time as they plan for their futures. The school hall was buzzing with noise as students delved deeper into occupations and career paths under the strict time limit of the bell before moving on to the next visitor.
The students plan challenging questions in advance of the day and work in groups asking our visitors about qualifications, career opportunities, levels of pay and working conditions. Our visitors this year covered a wide breadth of employers and further and higher education institutions including Freelance art, NY Fire and Rescue, Animals in Tuition, Banking and Financial planning, BT, NY Police, York City in the Community, Selby College, Improving Learning, The University of Hull, Flamingo Land, Kellington Manor, B and A Careers, Sainsbury’s and Askham Bryan College.
There was something to appeal to everyone and students became aware of options they may have previously not considered. The day gave students a valuable insight into life beyond school and the opportunities available to young adults in the future. Speed Dating with Industry is an important and enjoyable component of our careers work in school. We are grateful to the business partners and further and higher education institutions who supported us with this event
