York College student Ellie Watson is targeting a career in music after shining in two national competitions.

Brass player Ellie, 17, has come first in the Youth Band Nationals and second in the Action Medical Research Youth Entertainment Championships of Great Britain this academic year.

The former Selby High School pupil, who plays the cornet and tenor horn, combines her Extended Diploma in Music (Level 3) studies with competing across Europe.

She currently plays in three groups; Elland Silver Youth Band, Knottingley Silver Band and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.

Ellie said:

My tutors understood how important the competitions were to me and made sure I was able to catch up with my college work.

It was fantastic to compete at such a high level and the icing on the cake was coming first in the Youth Band Nationals and second in the Action Medical Research Youth Entertainment Championships of Great Britain.

Ellie's course has seen her learn how to operate a mixing desk, compose and record popular music.
